Gorson Bugyal Trek Guide: The Easiest Big Views Near Auli
If you want a serious Himalayan view without a serious trek, Gorson Bugyal is the answer — and it's close enough to do as a half-day outing from your stay.
The basics
- Distance from Auli: about 3–4 km
- Time needed: roughly half a day, including the walk in and out
- Difficulty: short but genuinely uphill in places — manageable for most reasonably fit visitors, not a technical trek
- Elevation: the meadow sits at around 3,056 metres
What you'll see
Gorson Bugyal is a huge open meadow set inside a mixed forest of oak and conifer — the kind of view that normally takes days of trekking to reach, delivered here in a few hours. On a clear day, you get sightlines to three major peaks: Nanda Devi, Trishul, and Dronagiri. In spring, the meadow turns lush green; in winter, it's snow-covered and arguably even more dramatic.
About a kilometre further on is Chattarkund, a small freshwater spring tucked into dense forest — worth the short extra walk if you have the time.
Getting there
The trek starts from Auli itself and climbs through pine forest toward the open meadow. With the Joshimath–Auli ropeway currently closed, this is entirely a walking route rather than a ropeway-plus-short-walk combination — still very manageable for most visitors.
Best time to go
Spring, when the meadow is at its greenest, or winter, when it's blanketed in snow — both are genuinely striking in different ways. Avoid the trek during heavy monsoon rain, when trails can be slick and visibility poor.
Practical notes
- There's no accommodation at Gorson Bugyal itself — plan to be back in Auli by evening.
- A local guide isn't strictly necessary for this trek but is worth arranging if you want route insight or are unfamiliar with the terrain.
- Pack layers and good footwear regardless of season — weather changes fast at this altitude.
