A Winter Weekend at WAMOS
Winter is when Auli makes its case most loudly — and when a stay here slows down to match it.

Friday: arrival
You'll likely arrive in the afternoon, after the drive up from Joshimath, with the light already turning gold on the ridgeline. The temperature drops fast once the sun starts going — this is peak season, typically −6°C to 4°C — so the first thing that happens is usually a hot cup of something and a seat by the window, watching the mountains do the thing mountains do at dusk.
By evening, there's a bonfire. Not a scheduled activity — just a fire, some conversation, and a sky that gets genuinely dark once you're this far from anything resembling a city.
Saturday: the slow kind of full day
Mornings here start on their own schedule. Birdsong first, then tea, then whatever the window is showing that day — sometimes cloud, sometimes a clean view straight to Nanda Devi. There's no rush to leave the room.
If you want to move, a guided walk through the pine forest is easy to arrange, and if you're up for more, Gorson Bugyal — a short trek away — is one of the best short hikes in the region, especially with snow on the meadow. Full trek guide here.
For most guests, though, winter afternoons at WAMOS mean doing very little on purpose: reading, watching weather move across the valley, or just being warm somewhere cold is beautiful.
Saturday night: the sky
This is the real reason to come in winter. Clear, cold nights at this altitude with minimal light pollution make for some of the sharpest stargazing you'll find in Uttarakhand. Read our stargazing guide if you want to plan around a specific moon phase.
Sunday: departure, reluctantly
Checkout is slow by design too. Most guests leave later than planned — which we've come to think of as the actual sign that a weekend here worked.
What to pack
Layers, without exception. Days can be mild in direct sun; nights are genuinely cold. Good boots for the walk to Gorson Bugyal if you're going, and a camera that works in low light if the sky cooperates.
Check winter availability — this is our busiest season, so dates go fast.
